La Grande man dies in standoff with police

La Grande, Ore. — The Union County Major Crime Team was activated at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 2010 to investigate an officer involved in use of deadly physical force.

Law enforcement officers were dispatched following a request for assistance regarding an assault at 1102 O Avenue in La Grande. After conducting a preliminary investigation a La Grande Police Department officer entered the residence and was immediately confronted by 22-year-old Cody Wyatt Williams who was armed with a shotgun. Shots were fired and Williams died at the scene.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, has been placed on administrative leave per departmental policy and Senate Bill 111 protocols. The investigation is ongoing and further details will be released by the Union County District Attorney’s Office as the investigation allows.
