Highway closed West of La Grande for construction season

Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) contractor Oregon Mainline has shifted westbound traffic to the eastbound freeway and closed two freeway ramps to accommodate the multi-year highway improvement project between the Kamela Interchange at Exit 246 and the Second Street undercrossing in La Grande, near mile post 260. Most of the traffic impacts will be between Hilgard State Park near mile post 252 and Exit 261 in La Grande where the freeway is being resurfaced with concrete in the slow lane and new asphalt in the fast lane.

Travelers can expect traffic pattern changes, reduced speeds, narrow lanes with no shoulders, plus single lane eastbound and westbound traffic separated by concrete barrier. The westbound Exit 259 on-ramp at the west end of La Grande is closed through the 2014 construction season. The westbound on-ramp at Exit 256 is also closed for about three months.

Along with pavement resurfacing, the $43 million contract to complete construction on the I-84 includes: replacement of functionally obsolete median barrier; bridge repairs; truck chain-up area improvements; rock fall upgrades; plus the construction of a westbound truck climbing lane along the Spring Creek grade near mile post 247.

Due to narrow, single lane travel in both eastbound and westbound lanes bicycle riders will not be allowed on the freeway between mile post 252 near Hilgard State Park and Exit 261. Bicycle riders can choose to ride an alternate route via OR 204 (Tollgate Hwy.) and OR 82, or ride the free transit shuttle between the Arrowhead Truck Stop near Exit 216 and the La Grande Transit Center near Exit 261 in La Grande. Bicycle detour information can be found on the ODOT Web at www.tinyurl.com/I-84BikeDetour.

ODOT is utilizing several funding sources to complete the project, including Jobs and Transportation Act funds passed by the 2009 Oregon Legislature, Federal Interstate Maintenance funds, plus transportation safety and operations money.
